Turiya Wines

On the next part of the journey we were drinking wine….

Located in Lompoc, Turiya Wines is a very small, largely one-person urban winery.  That one-person is Angela Solveno.  She is Turiya Wines.  Angela started out as a wine writer, learning the ins and outs of the business along the way to such a degree that she decided to make her own wine.  I am happy to report that her efforts have been quite successful.
From the outside, Turiya is not very impressive, as shown above.  The interior is quite nice, however.  We came with our entire group of ten and were very comfortably seated.  No food is served, but you can arrange to have it brought in.  This time around we only had cheese plates….

Now on to the wines.  Tasting was $25 per, and as you can see in the list below a they produce very small batches of a wide variety of wines.  All of their wines are red and well-aged, i.e., pretty much at their peak.  As an important note, Angela (shown above) tries to keep the alcohol levels on her wines low, hence the grapes are often picked a bit early, leaving the wines more acidic and less fruity.  I favor fruity wines with low acidity.  Even so, I found her wines to be pretty good.

My favorite was the 2011 Sangiovese, which, I have since come to learn, earned a 93 from Wine Enthusiast – the highest score any of their wines achieved.  It’s good to see Wine Enthusiast giving the wines I like their due….  I mean, everyone should just agree with me, right!
Turiya has a unique wine club.  Members get four bottles twice a year at a cost of $400 per shipment.  Members can purchase additional bottles at a 15% discount, with a 10% discount on other merchandise.  As for tasting, well, how about this:  four complementary barrel tastings – with the winemaker – per year!

Just visited Chapin Family Vineyards in Temecula. Completely opposite approach to wine making -- all of the grapes picked at optimum ripeness. Outstanding results. Probably the best wines in Southern California!

Sorry to report that Turiya’s winemaker, Angela died the eve of 1/6/25. This info is per Brandon of the cooperative where Angela made her wine. We arrived 1/7/25 for a Turiya tasting and Brandon gave us the news. Very sad. No other details were provided. Thanks for this review.
