Edwards Vineyard & Cellars

It was a long drive along winding mountain roads.  Much longer than it should have been (we missed our turnoff).  But we finally reached our destination:  Edwards Vineyard & Cellars.  This is one winery that I decided to visit strictly because of their wines.  I’m glad I did.
I’d first learned of Edwards a few years ago from a wine shop in Del Mar (Flower Hill strip mall, just off of the 5 freeway).  Few wine shops carry local wines, and this may have been at the time the only Ramona wine offered in any shop.  I was impressed with the wine but was not able to visit since they were not open to the public.  Well, they are now, so we finally made it out there.
Edwards is on 78 well past downtown Ramona.  As you can see in the pictures that follow, there is no there there.  No winery building at all.  Just outdoor patio with a storage room, tables, netting, and, thankfully, umbrellas.  It was hot, but there was enough of a breeze to make it bearable.  Breeze and good wine

We spent a great deal of time with the owners and how they managed to get their wines into the Del Mar wine shop.  It was a “we’ll get back to you” thing for awhile, but they finally got the shop to taste the wine.  That worked.  More than a few cases since have made their way to the coast.
As you can see in the wine menu below, they offer a limited number of red wines and one rose, all estate bottled.  Their production is very limited, so they don’t bother with a wine club. But they do waive the $8 tasting fee if you buy a bottle of their wine.
Oh, and if you do decide to visit them, the turnoff to Edwards is on your left just past the huge chicken farm, which, when the wind blows the wrong way….
